What Is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is one of the most common Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD). Gonorrhea is caused by a bacterial infection from bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
How is gonorrhea spread? Gonorrhea spreads through vaginal, anal, and oral intercourse. It can infect the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, urethra, eyes, and throat.
Even if you have been treated for gonorrhea before, you may still contract it subsequently.
In the majority of people, gonorrhea does not show any symptoms. If symptoms do appear after infection, it usually takes a few weeks for them to appear. Gonorrhea symptoms may include the following:

What happens if I don't get treated for gonorrhea? In women, untreated gonorrhea can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID may cause permanent damage to the reproductive system, including long-term pelvic pain, inability to get pregnant, and ectopic pregnancy.
