What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

For a man, the ability to perform in the bedroom means more than just fulfilling nature’s call-to-action for procreation. It also signifies to him and his partner his virility, vitality and most of all, his manhood.

But nature has not always been so kind to men, for there are some who, for one reason or another, just aren’t quite able to rise up to the occasion. The inability to perform and deliver can result in much psychological stress and cause much strain to a relationship, further adding to and aggravating a medical condition known as Erectile Dysfunction.

Often causes are because of general health issues. Diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and kidney disease are associated with erectile dysfunction. It is common for patients and their partners to feel inappropriately responsible for the erectile dysfunction. Some patient partners worry they might not be sufficiently attractive. With appropriate health interventions, many patients find they improve.

Erectile Dysfunction Causes

Erectile Dysfunction, or ED for short, is a complex medical problem with a multitude of possible causes, both psychogenic and physiologic in nature.

Psychogenic causes could be as simple as isolated “not-in-the-mood” instances, or as complicated as past traumatic sexual experiences such as sexual assaults. Most of the time, it is somewhere in between. Like a relationship on the rock, over familiarity in a long relationship where the sparks and rush of first love had long run its course, or simply a case of things becoming too routine and lacking in perceived adventure and excitement.

In such cases, it is best to seek professional counselling to help address and resolve any underlying psychogenic problem.

In many other ED cases, however, something went wrong in the physiologic side. While unfortunate, physical causes of ED stand a good chance of being eradicated with the help of today’s advanced medical treatment.

Physical causes of ED are chiefly attributable to one core element – the inability of getting blood to flow to and reach where it counts, the penis. The usual suspects would be anomaly in the physical penis anatomy, where it is possibly correctable via medical procedures, or hormonal imbalances related, of which hormonal therapy offers potential of a fix. It may also be due to diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, kidney disease or obesity, factors known for impeding and obstructing vital blood flow to the male genitalia. Or it could simply be a case of living a lifestyle incompatible with man’s bedroom performance prowess where it counts, such as smoking or leading a physically inactive lifestyle, again contributary factors in one’s ability to move blood around.

Treatments Available

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) for ED Treatment consists of low-intensity shock waves that are applied to different areas of the penis non-invasively. ESWT treatment works by stimulating new blood vessel growth and improving blood flow, thereby improving the ability to achieve an erection, naturally and spontaneously.

It is a clinically-proven, HSA-Approved procedure featured in numerous publications such as CNA, TODAY and Wanbao.

Best of all, it requires no post-procedure medication sustenance, has long-lasting results, and no major adverse side effects observed over the past 8 years of trials. The treatment has been used in government hospitals in Singapore and thus far, no major concerns have been raised.

ESWT has helped nearly 70% of men suffering from vasculogenic ED achieve significant and lasting improvement of erectile function over the years, depending on the severity and case history.

This is a procedure most suitable for and effective on men who have blood flow related erectile dysfunction, and those who have cardiovascular conditions such as diabetes.

ESWT is an excellent alternative to the more dreaded and invasive action of surgical procedures and implants, usually the last line of defence when all else fails. And it is certainly a much safer and convenient alternative to that of taking ED pills, which is short-lived in effect and requires continued sustenance, as it does not cure the underlying problem.
